Stories from the Haven

Every child comes to the Haven with a background of abuse, neglect, destitution and abandonment.

The Haven provides them with a home they never had — with love, care, support, encouragement and hope for a better life. Each child is treated as one of their own and becomes part of a family. Here are a few of the children's stories.

Beyond the Haven

The feeding scheme reaches into the local community and beyond.

These beautiful people's hearts are so big in their desire to help that they also run a feeding scheme.

The Haven provides nutritious food to impoverished people directly outside the Haven and across desperate areas in Cape Town, feeding thousands of people a week.

The story of the Haven

Healing souls and changing lives

Maria and Alec Solomon are the amazing couple at the heart of the Haven. One day Maria's son had a friend over who revealed to Maria that he had been abused. Maria had such compassion for this poor child that she needed to do something about it, and that is how the Haven began.

Mitchells Plain is a gang and drug infested and very poor part of Cape Town. In the beginning Maria and Alec had four children of their own and a very humble two-bedroom home. Over many years they gradually expanded and today, virtually every part of the small property has been adapted to provide a secure, loving home for around 20 children. Some children stay permanently, some temporarily and some on an emergency overnight basis. Every child becomes part of the family and is provided with the love and care they desperately need. They all come from very sad backgrounds of abuse and neglect. The Haven provides trauma support and the love, security and stability for these children to begin the healing process.

Tutoring & Education

Schooling can be challenging for many of the children at the Haven. Some arrive with large gaps in their schooling, and many of their teachers at school do not always turn up. The Haven hires a tutor to come for a few hours on weekday afternoons, providing essential help for the children to catch up and get a better education.
